The Ferry to Waiheke

...my camera was buried in my backpack for the remaining flight time. At IAH we had enough time for supper--we saved dessert for LA. At LA, we had 3 hours between flights and needed two hours to change terminal and airline. The last hour let us get dessert at Chili's. Qantas had free video on demand at each seat and we could sleep and watch movies for the next 12 hours.

At customs they sent us to biohazard check--we'd been camping within the last 30 days. They inspected our hiking boots and took the tents for a good checkout. After camping with Troop 1861 last week, I cleaned our tents in the washing machine and my boots with a toothbrush. We were allowed to enter the country and had to wait 10 minutes to get our tents back.

The tents were fine. We returned them to the suitcases and found our first van driver, Bruce.

Bruce took us to our landlady's home outside Auckland and we had tea and cake while getting to know one another. She realized that our baggage would not fit in her car and phoned for a van to take us to the ferry.

Both van drivers offered advice on driving 'on the wrong side of the road.' I hoped it would help.

At left, Auckland fades as we approach Waiheke. At right, another view of the daily commute to work.
